Pre-Surgery Planning and Scheduling

Thank you for choosing Dr. Janz for your surgical needs. We want to make sure your Surgery scheduling process goes smoothly!

 Please review the following:

  • After initially booking surgery, you will be contacted within the next five business days to begin scheduling your surgery.
  • Pre-operative testing may be required.
  • If you need to reach the scheduling department at any time, the most effective way is to message them through Klara.
  • Terri (Dr. Janz's Secretary) or a covering secretary will set up Klara during the initial surgical booking.
  • Check your phone to confirm you received the message and save it to your contacts so you can enjoy the benefits of KLARA.
  • You can also send a KLARA message from our webpage at www.mdbonedocs.com.
  • Once you are active on Klara, you will be able to communicate with the surgical department or me, make a future appointment, request medication refills, request a copy of your bill, send an updated insurance card, or send any forms over for completion.

You may need to complete (Disability or FMLA).

We hope this assists with the process for communicating with our office and will reduce any anxiety you might have as your surgery date gets closer.

Thank You,

Terri & Dr. Janz

Pre-Surgery Planning

Pre-surgery planning for hand surgery involves
following specific fasting and medication guidelines, preparing your home for recovery, and ensuring you have transportation and support in place. You will need to stop certain medications like aspirin and anti-inflammatories, avoid eating or drinking after midnight, and arrange for someone to drive you home. It is also important to stop smoking, remove jewelry and nail polish, and wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of surgery.
Medication and health

Discontinue certain medications:

  • Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen), and some herbal supplements at least a week before surgery, as they can increase bleeding. Always consult your doctor before stopping any medication.

Discuss all medications:

  • Inform your surgeon about all prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements you take.

Address infections:

  • Get any infections, such as tooth, gum, bladder, or bowel problems, treated before your surgery date.

Notify your doctor of illness:

  • Inform your surgeon if you become sick with a cold, sore throat, or fever before surgery.

Day of surgery

Fast as instructed:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, unless specifically told otherwise by your doctor.

Arrive on time:

  • Plan to arrive at the hospital at least 1.5 to 2 hours before your surgery.

Dress for comfort:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with wide or button-down sleeves that can be easily put on and taken off.

Remove personal items:

  • Remove all nail polish, makeup, jewelry, and contact lenses before you arrive.

Do not bring valuables:

  • Leave valuable personal belongings at home.

Home and recovery preparation

Arrange for transportation:

  • You will need a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery. You will not be able to drive yourself.

Arrange for help:

  • Plan for someone to assist you with daily tasks like cooking, shopping, and laundry during your recovery.

Prepare your home:

  • Stock your home with necessities and pre-made meals. Put frequently used items within easy reach and remove trip hazards like loose carpets and electrical cords.

Prepare your space:

  • Make sure you have a stable chair with a firm back, armrests, and a cushion for use after surgery.
